What is CoQ10?

by Steven Carney on July 19, 2012

CoQ10 (or Coenzyme Q10) is found throughout the body and is known to be an important energy source for cells/cellular mitochondria (the tiny engines in cells that convert fat or glucose into energy), as well as a potent antioxidant. It is also known as Ubiquinone because it is so prevalent in the body.

With age, levels of Q10 tend to decline and can contribute to lower energy and more internal oxidation/increased aging inside and out! Some research indicates that it might help with blood pressure, inflammation, and other health areas.

CoQ10 is extremely important for key organs, especially the heart. One irony is that people who take statin drugs for heart disease have lower levels of Q10 because its production in the liver is disrupted by statin drugs.

Many doctors don’t seem to know about that side effect, and when they put their patients on statins, their heart function can decline over time because of lower levels of Q10 from the very drugs that are supposed to help heart disease! Yet another example of why drugs should be a last resort, not the first line of treatment!

CoQ10 can support key functions:

  • Heart strength/function
  • Good blood pressure
  • Organ function
  • Overall energy
  • Antioxidant/immune support
  • Improved neurotransmitters/brain function
  • Weight management/loss

I take Q10 most days (100 mg) and feel healthy energy from it. I know of no serious health risks, unless someone was to take very large quantities, potentially causing a bit of caffeine-like jitters or insomnia. Most experts agree that 100 mg/day is a safe amount.
