Secrets for a Long Life

Many days, I see people in their 50s, 60s, and beyond who are overweight and struggling to function. When I’m at a store, I see many hunched over their shopping carts as they shuffle slowly along. I’m sure many have chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure (hypertension), high LDL cholesterol and declining heart health, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.

Yet, these chronic, lifestyle-driven conditions are largely avoidable. These aren’t problems you catch like a contagious disease. They don’t need to happen!

It’s a myth that with age, we gain weight, become less active and need drugs for our ailments (most drugs never cure you anyway, they mask symptoms, not treat the cause)! In truth, we are often the cause of our own problems! I don’t say that to make people feel guilty, I say it so people realize they are empowered to change how they live and restore their health!

How common is the problem?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

  • About 70% of deaths in the U.S. are from chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and strokes (all largely avoidable).
  • About 50% of adults have a chronic disease (over 100 million)!
  • About 20% (or 50 million) Americans have arthritis (60% are under 65 years old)!
  • About 33% of US adults are obese and about 20% of children (ages 6-19) are obese too!
  • More teens and young adults have weight problems, early heart disease, pre-diabetes, etc.

Although the U.S. spends the most in the world for healthcare, with the fastest cost increases, we don’t rank well for life expectancy. We are 29th (or lower) depending on who’s data you look at. Between 1960 and 2010, we dropped 13 places (we started in 16th place, which wasn’t that great either).

What can we do to live a long healthy life?

It’s been known for some time that about 70% of our chronic conditions and diseases are driven by lifestyle rather than genetics. That means we are in control of our health and longevity if we chose to be! How we live largely determines how and when we die! It’s pretty simple! Here are the main lifestyle areas to consider:

  • Nutrition (eat more whole foods and wean yourself from sugar and refined carbs).
  • Activity levels (even brisk walking 3-4 times a week is helpful. Just get moving)!
  • Smoking or excessive alcohol consumption (time to let go of these destructive habits)!
  • Get quality sleep nightly (critical for weight management and overall health/repair).
