As we finish up the holidays, many of you are looking ahead to 2015. What kind of year will it be for you? Have you made a few resolutions? Many people make resolutions for areas like more income, better health, becoming more organized, improving time-management, etc. Maybe you are looking to improve your relationships as well. Are you are you planning to:

  • Lose weight
  • Eat less junk food/processed food
  • Exercise more
  • Quit smoking
  • Make more money/cut debt
  • Improve relationships
  • Get more organized
  • Be on time more often?

It’s fine to set some goals but do you know how you will get there? The reason many people fail to get the results they want is simple: It takes the right steps to reach a goal, and those steps need to be mapped out, based on small, gradual changes. Expecting drastic, overnight improvements in any area of your life will be stressful and hard to stay with. Hence, most people give up on their resolutions by late January!

So the key is to create a workable plan, one that helps to minimize the stress of changing the habits and ineffective things you do now. The right plan will help to prevent a return to your old, familiar habits, leaving the new resolutions in the dust bin of time!

Why not make 2015 an amazing, break-out year? Why not become the person you really want to be, and have more success overcoming those old patterns. You know, the patterns and habits that keep you stuck right where you are now. By setting some achievable goals and mapping the steps to get there, you can have your best year ever! You can literally make double or triple the progress you normally make! Here’s What to do differently:

1. Write down 2-3 main goals

Start with the most important goals you want to reach in 2015 (I’ll include a simple format below). Even writing down 2-3 goals will get the process started and help you to focus on those areas you really want to improve.

Include the resources, information and skills you need to achieve the goals you want. What’s holding you back? What obstacles are in your way? Like cleaning out a cluttered desk or closet, sometimes the obstacles are right under your nose!

For you or anyone to change habits, it takes support, encouragement and guidance. Changing eating or other lifestyle habits requires skill and understanding because habits repeat on a sub-conscious level; they are instinctive. Without the right foundational plan, gradual steps and effective support, many people revert back to their comfort zone without thinking. Before you know it, you’re back to the things that are familiar and easy, even if they are ineffective! That’s why people get stuck where they are. So don’t try it alone. Success will be less likely!

Here is that sample form I mentioned:

In 2015, I’d like to _________________________________________________________

To achieve this goal, I need more info, resources, skills, etc. _________________________________________________________

In 2015, I’d like to _________________________________________________________

2. Make gradual changes

Making gradual changes based on the goals you choose and the things you need to achieve them will be easier to accomplish. They will also provide early successes, which can give you a sense of forward momentum and positive improvement to keep you going that direction! Yes, even a few small steps and improvements can bring personal satisfaction.

For example, if you want to trim down, aim for more gradual weight loss of a few pounds/week. Don’t try to lose 10 pounds in a week with a crash diet! Besides, there is no need to diet, it’s a failed concept (see my many posts on weight loss). Why not learn to switch out some of the processed, weight-inducing foods you eat (sugars, sweet drinks and refined wheat products like cookies, cakes, muffins, rolls) for more whole, balanced foods? That way, you can shed a few pounds naturally each week and you don’t need to diet, count calories or take weight loss pills (those tend to create dependency anyway)!

In other words, there are better chances for success in just about any area of your life, based on an achievable goal and effective steps to get you there. In fact, it is like climbing a set of steps. Do you try to take 3 at once, even as you hold groceries and packages? You know it’s not going to work! How about going down the stairs taking 3 at once as you haul some trash bags out. You know you’ll take a tumble. So instead of saving time, you can end up in the ER! BTW, if you decide to work with me, I guarantee results with your resolutions and challenges.

3. Keep stress down and minimize disruption

Many people resolve to lose weight, eat healthier, or make more money all at once, without a workable plan, attainable goals and the steps to get you there. This plan needs to be based on small, achievable steps and interim weekly goals to get the process going. You may also need more resources or professional support and advice.

Either way, assume several steps for each goal. That’s far more realistic and attainable than trying to make one giant step! You need to chart your course or you’ll get lost or frustrated in the process. And drastic change adds lots of stress as you struggle to break your everyday habits, the ones that got you where you are now.

So don’t take on so much that your lifestyle goes out the window and you find you are trying to change too many things at once. Anything that disrupts your lifestyle will increase stress and frustration, a process that will likely lead back to your comfort zone and a sense of failure. You will return to old habits, the one’s you know, even when you know they are unhealthy or counterproductive to your goals and desires!

Your recipe for success in 2015

Your recipe for success in 2015 is simple: Create a plan that includes some key goals and the resources or help you need. Map out several small steps so the transition is easier and less stressful. That’s how you to move forward in 2015! With all those elements in place, you can improve your life, health, relationships or finances in a matter of a few weeks!

And here’s the thing: Once change starts, it will bring positive results and improvement for the better; it creates momentum, and other challenges begin to fall away as confidence grows and improvements grow. I’ve seen it with many clients!

The approach I’ve outlined can apply to every aspect of life, including health, career, job and relationship issues. The coaching process is applicable to every area, including small business challenges. Because I have training in multiple areas of coaching and training, I help people achieve more success in a few calls!
