Age and Weight Gain a Myth?

The simple answer is yes! Although many people notice a gradual slowing to their energy and metabolism after age 30, the real problem is that people don’t make small adjustments they need to make as they go. They eat the same foods they ate in their 20s or early 30s and are often less active with age. Without some adjustments to these bodily changes, you have the perfect recipe for weight gain and increasing health problems, such as chronic inflammation, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, even cancer!

Why is food the problem?

We handle processed foods less effectively with age, so things like sugar and refined carbs need to be replaced as you get older. Begin to incorporate more healthy, whole foods by age 30, ones that digest more slowly and keep blood sugar stable. Here are some common foods to cut back on and avoid:

  • Sugar and HFC (high fructose corn syrup) whether in soda, sweet drinks, candy, cookies, etc.
  • Refined-carb foods (bread, crackers, cereals, cakes, pretzels, potato chips, etc.).
  • Processed meats (hot dogs, bacon, salami, ham, luncheon meats) with nitrates or nitrites.
  • Fried foods and vegetable oils like corn oil, higher in inflammatory omega-6 fats.

What do I eat?

We need to switch to more simple, whole foods and lean proteins into our 30s and beyond. Begin to increase your favorite veggies until they are almost half of your meal plate, along with lean proteins (fish, chicken, etc.). By age 50, veggies should be half your plate (except white potatoes), but the varieties, flavors and health benefits are endless! Eat more whole “Power Foods” for snacks, such as nuts, veggie sticks, fruits, low-fat cheese, and olives. See these previous posts for more details:

As you age, it’s best to wean yourself from the inflammatory foods listed above (you can start in your 20s if you want and you’ll be ahead of the game)! You really don’t need those foods; they cause far more problems than they are worth. And they are more expensive (you get little nutrition/empty calories) for the money, compared with more whole and more filling foods.

So by making small shifts as you go, the result is little or no weight gain with age! Yes, it’s completely possible to feel full and satisfied, never diet or starve yourself, and not gain weight into your 40s, 50s and beyond, even if your parents did! You will also feel great with more healthy energy! Let your weight be a guide. Are you gaining noticeable weight each year? Are you buying larger jeans? Time to alter your habits a bit!

Of course, staying/being active 3-4 days a week has many health benefits and contributes to stable weight or weight loss as well (even 15 or 20 minutes of brisk walking several days a week counts).

You can drive right past the doctor’s office and smile! You’ll feel healthy, be healthy, and save money on insurance and drugs, most of which never cure your problems anyway!
