3 Ways to Improve Wrinkles

Although a few wrinkles can be part of normal aging, many people do things that increase their wrinkles a lot! These fall into 3 main areas, although if you avoid these things and include some beneficial things, you can look 10 years younger than your age!

1. Sugary Foods and Beverages 

Daily sugar intake with refined-carb foods and snacks (they quickly become sugar in the blood stream) damage arteries and tissues, including your skin. Sodas and sugary drinks are big offenders, made with unhealthy, even toxic calories!

A high sugar intake also encourages the formation of AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products). Those molecules form when the excess sugars attach to proteins, turning them into Franken Proteins! In your skin, this process causes disruption of collagen, causing skin to sag more with age as structure and strength are compromised. AGEs also cause aging through oxidation, making you older than your years!

What to do: Cut back on refined sugar consumption, including snack foods like candy, cookies, crackers and chips. Snack on Power Foods like nuts, fruits, veggies and low-fat cheese. 2. Sun Exposure and Tanning

If you feel you need to be tan in your youth, you will also have more wrinkles as you age. That’s because UV rays will age you significantly! Without sunscreen or clothing, UV rays also break down the connective tissue of your skin (collagen and elastin). The result will be a more wrinkled, leathery look as you get older, including age spots/blotches because the sun also disrupts the pigment cells in your skin. What to do: Use sunscreen anytime you’re outside. If you are fair skinned, use SPF 30 or higher, and avoid the hottest times of the day, between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Consider natural tanning creams as an alternative and use moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated.

3. Inactivity/Sedentary life

Too little activity reduces blood flow and increases weight (which increases inflammation). Inactivity can increase atherosclerosis which begins to restrict blood flow in your 30s to 50s. If you aren’t active at least 3-4 times per week, your skin will look less healthy and vibrant.

What to do: Get moving! Cardio is especially good (activities like brisk walking, jogging, using a treadmill, especially tilted uphill, dancing, yard work), anything that gets your heart pumping for 20 minutes or more will help. Resistance/weight training can also help build underlying muscle and improve tone. Activity increases blood flow, oxygen and nutrient circulation. It also keeps your heart strong!
