3 Shocking Cancer Myths

by Steven Carney on May 19, 2012

We’ve all heard of cancer. Maybe you’ve had a relative or friend who had cancer. If so, I hope they came out of it okay. I would like to dispel 3 common myths about cancer that can change your life and keep you from getting cancer!

1. Cancer is a disease that is just bad luck

This is false! We have cell mutations occurring all the time. It’s the function of our immune system to recognize those defective cells and destroy them (with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants all playing important roles by helping to protect your cellular DNA)!

But if your immune system is not functioning at full power, those mutations can take hold and grow. You will be more susceptible to sickness in general, including cancer. You can give you immune system a boost with the right nutrition, activity, lower stress, and more!

2. Cancer is genetic

This is also false! Most experts now say up to 75% of cancers come from your lifestyle and environment; genetics accounts for only 5 to 10% of cancers. Important lifestyle factors are:

  • Smoking
  • High sugar/carb consumption (most people consume way too much sugar)!
  • Eating too much red/processed meat.
  • Consuming too many omega-6 vegetable oils and fried foods
  • Having more than 2 drinks of alcohol per day
  • Exposure to chemicals and toxic substances
  • Too many free radicles, not enough antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
  • Too little activity/excess weight

Genetics is often more of a possibility than a certainty. You can still use your lifestyle to minimize any risk! Research into epigenetics (how genes are affected by factors outside DNA, like lifestyle/environment), has shown that a healthy lifestyle can literally turn on good genes and an unhealthy lifestyle, which most people have, turns on disease genes. How you live can really tip the balance!

3. A cancer diagnosis means chemo and radiation

Although many people try these treatments, there are other helpful approaches, so again, false! In fact, many cancer treatments like chemo and radiation can cause heart and cardiovascular problems. These are highly toxic chemicals and risky procedures to many areas of the body (see last link for Harvard advisory)!

Many health experts recommended that you improve your lifestyle too! For example:

  • If you smoke, stop. Get support if you need it!
  • Improve your nutrition (less sugar, more lean protein/fish, veggies, nuts, fruits, vitamins, etc.).
  • Lower inflammation with diet and exercise, along with supplements like vitamin D and fish oil.
  • Become more active 3-4 times a week if you are not.
  • Learn to lower stress.
  • Trim excess pounds, a source of inflammation and hormonal imbalances!

All of these lifestyle approaches are within your control and they can help to minimize the risk of getting cancer (see link for more info). Be sure to see the Health News tab above which has a large section on research studies about cancer, prevention, etc.

As a health and life coach, I can give you the keys to a healthier lifestyle over a few weeks, including lowering your risk for a whole range of health problems and diseases like cancer. It’s best to learn a disease-fighting lifestyle before you get sick!

If you do get sick, I can also help you improve your ability to fight disease, including your mental and emotional outlook and your ability to remain positive. Feel free to ask a question with the e-mail button in social media icons on the right!
