6 Key Strategies to Fight Cancer

by Steven Carney on December 5, 2017

This is post #137, about 6-key strategies to fight cancer on a fundamental level, uncovering the critical physiological problems that must be addressed for long-term remission.

This site is a collection of breakthrough articles and resources at your fingertips. Feel free to browse the information here. Whether you have health, life or prosperity challenges, I can help you achieve the life you desire. I offer a unique mix of coaching, support and experience with multiple certifications and success with my own life challenges: A serious childhood illness, blood sugar problems, allergies, low thyroid, accident injuries, and more, all overcome without drugs or common medical procedures.

Cancer is a very complex and challenging disease. There are well over 100 types of cancer, and if you include the hundreds of cancer mutations and combinations, each with a myriad of stages (0-4 or 1-4), and additional TNM designations (for Tumor, Node involvement and Metastasis), grades, organ locations and effects on tissues and bodily systems, cancer is a very complex, evolving disease.

At the same time, established cancer cells and tumors share some common characteristics, from their heavy reliance on glucose and low-oxygen metabolism (glycolysis), to creating destructive, acidic environments within the body, increasing inflammation, and evading immune cells. They also share traits with other cells and like bacteria and viruses: They can adapt, build communities, communicate and proliferate. They infect and kill nearby cells and tissues.

And as cancer cells continue to spread and adapt, they often become resistant to standard medical treatments like surgery, chemo and radiation, as they continue to proliferate and destroy healthy cells and invade organs. It’s like a potentially deadly infection caused by your own cells, ones that your immune system might not see as the serious threat and invader that it is.

This is a previous post I wrote on cancer. It has lots of good information about the origins, prevention and lifestyle effects on cancer:

5 Keys to Prevent Cancer

The standard medical approaches of surgery, chemo and radiation are largely focused on eliminating and shrinking tumors that are easily felt or visible on scans, but tumors are just one symptom of cancer’s destructive effects (as the important points below will demonstrate).

Unfortunately, those standardized medical treatments do not address the origins or etiology of how the cancer developed in the first place. Nor do they address a cancer’s continuing existence and its ability to proliferate. All the genetic testing of cancer cells and types won’t lead to a cure without addressing the underlying metabolic, physiological roots and psychological effects outlined below. Like most Western medicine, cancer treatments are myopically focused on treating symptoms like tumors, but NOT finding a cure or permanent return to homeostasis!

As a result of medicine’s reductionist (non-holistic), profit-driven view of cancer and its focus on treating symptoms, cancer continues to kill more than 600,000 people in the U.S. annually (more than 8 million deaths world-wide), with over 1.5 million cases diagnosed each year, and costs exceeding $125 billion annually.

The so-called war on cancer has gone on for more than 40 years with virtually no cure for most patients, largely because Pharma has had a strangle-hold on medical education for 20 or 30 years!

https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/understanding/statistics

https://www.cancer.gov/about-nci/legislative/history/national-cancer-act-1971

https://www.csicop.org/si/show/war_on_cancer_a_progress_report_for_skeptics

So why does cancer continue to spread and kill so persistently, and why doesn’t Western medicine do a better job of getting to the root causes of cancer? As indicated above, it’s largely based on the focus of money and profits at the expense of health and recovery. That is the terrible reality for cancer and most other diseases.

Western medical treatments are built on a foundation of patented drugs and devices that help companies build tremendous wealth. A patent creates a monopoly for the drug or device; there is little or no competition for 20 years. Once a drug or device is patented, the companies can charge higher prices and exploit sick patients and their insurance because there is less competition, allowing them to reap huge profits for their drugs and procedures.

Oncology doctors are particularly vulnerable to charges of corruption because they buy their chemo drugs at wholesale and mark them up significantly, charging patients and insurance companies far more than they cost. They get away with it largely because people are often willing to pay more to try to stop the disease and try live on.

But chemo offers a permanent cure less than 5% of the time: It rarely eliminates the cancer long term. For those who regain long-term health, it’s often their own immune system that rallies to stop the cancer for those who have a complete remission.

And don’t forget that chemo and radiation can often harm the immune system and trigger additional, secondary cancers because they are toxic chemicals and radiation, both risk factors for cancer! And get this, most oncologists wouldn’t undergo chemo for themselves or their families! They know how toxic the drugs are to healthy cells and immune function. People suffer lots of symptoms on those treatments.

6 Key strategies to Fight cancer

As you read through these 6-key strategies to fight cancer and the additional points below them, there is one shocking pattern to observe: These critical strategies are typically ignored by traditional medicine! Your doctor or oncologist probably won’t bring these up, yet without these critical systemic problems being addressed in your recovery program, your chances of a complete remission and return to health are virtually impossible!

1. Cancer’s favorite foods

Cancer’s favorite foods are sugar, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and refined carbs like breads, cereals and pasta, which all become glucose rapidly. These carbs are everywhere in junk and processed foods and they all turn into glucose quickly, often spiking blood-sugar levels. Because those are the preferred fuels for cancer cells and tumor growth, cancers will grow faster for those why habitually consume those junk foods and carbs.

Did you know? Cancer cells often have 10X the glucose receptors of normal cells; they will gobble up glucose other cells need. But unlike most cells, cancer cells rely largely on a low oxygen, non-mitochondrial metabolism approach called, anaerobic glycolysis.

When cancer cells break down glucose from carbs, they generate significant quantities of lactic acid under those low-oxygen conditions (especially in tumors, which often have poor arterial blood flow). Cancer cells bypass the normal mitochondrial energy production using higher oxygen and the Krebs cycle.

That significant metabolic difference is party why cancer cells can avoid normal cell cycles and death (apoptosis), which is often regulated by the mitochondria: Bypassing the mitochondria and normal glucose metabolism allows the cancer cells to grow rapidly while they also evade normal cell death and hide from immune cells.

Yet many cancer doctors will tell patients not to worry about diet, and to eat whatever they want. It’s ignorant, horrible, even deadly advice!

If you want to prevent or fight cancer effectively, you must stabilize your blood glucose and insulin levels on a daily basis by avoiding all sugars and refined carbs, and by eating 4-6 smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, keeping blood sugar and insulin as level as possible (below 90 MG/DL).

And focus on lots of veggies, especially cruciferous veggies, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, etc., plus nuts, seeds, olives and a moderate, healthy-protein intake (with portions the size of your palm), to minimize the growth and proliferation of cancer. Don’t feed the beast! Starve it!

Several supplements can also help to stabilize blood sugar if you tend to have high blood sugar, such as chromium picolinate, cinnamon, ginseng and others. But work on the diet first. You can always get a fasting glucose test if you don’t know your regular levels.

There is another important supplement that can help switch cancer cells to act more like regular cells, which can help stop their glycolysis. That compound is called, Dichloroacetate, or DCA, which is like a vinegar and salt compound that can help switch cancer cells using glycolysis back to using normal Krebs cycle metabolism, by reactivating their mitochondria.

Once a cancer cell’s mitochondria is reactivated, the mitochondria can also help those cells recognize that they are mutated and help them to commit apoptosis (cell death), and some use it to fight cancer. It takes some skill to use DCA. Effective dosing levels fall into a narrow range, and too-high a dose can lead to a range of side effects.

2. Cancer’s acidic environments

Cancer cells create and flourish in a more acidic environment, especially in and around tumors. As mentioned above, cancer cells generate large amounts of lactic acid (about 40 times what regular cells generate), which increases inflammation and lowers the pH of tumors and surrounding tissues, well into a state of acidosis. Cancer cells generate large amounts of lactic acid as they grow and proliferate because their preferred method of metabolism is anaerobic glycolysis, which produces lactic acid as a by-product (See #1 above).

Tumors and areas around them can have a pH value of 6-6.5 (a state of serious acidosis), which is anytime pH falls below 7.3. A pH that low will often kill healthy cells allowing for more cancerous growth and mutations, while providing more areas for cancer cells to invade.

Most blood and internal fluids are more alkaline, kept in a narrow range of 7.35-7.45. Remember, 7 is neutral pH, and the pH value system is not a linear scale but a logarithmic one, meaning each full point value of pH, dropping from 7.5 to 6.5 is 10 times more acidic.

The high acid levels created by cancer cells harm nearby cells and they also make it harder for immune cells to target cancer clusters and tumors (it’s repellent to them). That acidic also environment helps cancer to spread into nearby tissues as it kills nearby cells.

And the large amounts of lactic acid produced by cancer cells will get into the blood, where it is carried to the liver. As the liver breaks down the lactic acid, it creates more glucose, helping to feed cancer’s aggressive growth and survival. Cancer can lower urine and saliva pH values to 5 or 6, which are highly acidic. You can buy pH test strips and test yourself. If the saliva and urine pH rise above 7, cancer growth and proliferation will often be slowed or halted.

The good news is that diet and nutrition can really help combat lactic acidosis! The same diet mentioned above in point #1 that cuts sugar, junk food and processed foods and veggie oils (EVOO and virgin coconut oils are okay) is a good foundation because those junk foods are often pro-acidic.

Keep in mind that a high consumption of meat proteins will also produce more uric acid, so have modest portions of meat or seafood about the size of your palm or a deck of cards if you eat meat. Have plenty of veggies too, as they are alkalizing and good old water is usually a neutral pH of 7, so it’s also healthy!

You can also increase your uptake of alkalizing minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and others, including a supplement called MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane). MSM can help to help neutralize and the excess lactic acid specifically, and also help to cut the glucose cycle cancer cells depend on. It can also help to increase cellular oxygen and lower inflammation (see #3 below).

There is also a very potent alkalizing compound called Cesium Chloride (no, it’s not the radioactive form), used by some cancer patients as an alternative treatment. It has a very alkaline pH of 14, and cancer cells apparently take the cesium chloride up which can kill them by raising their pH to a alkaline level of 7.5-8 (but it’s not usually taken up by healthy cells).

Cesium chloride may also limit the glucose uptake of cancer cells, which can limit their spread and proliferation. But it requires some help and supervision for dosing and balancing it with other minerals. It would take another page to describe it all.

3. Cancer’s chronic inflammation

Cancer cells create and thrive in high-inflammatory environments by releasing numerous, pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, some of which are driven by their lactic acid production. Cancer can also arise after infections and systemic inflammation, so keeping systemic inflammation down is critical for both preventing and containing cancer cell growth and proliferation (you can get a CRP test every year if you don’t have cancer, if you do, get CBC tests with differentials to check your white cells, lymphocytes and immune cells as needed).

To reduce inflammation from cancer and other sources, diet is again key. The good news is that the same low sugar, low-carb, low-processed food diet outlined above, including a low/no intake of fried foods and processed veggie oils (which are also pro-inflammatory), will help prevent systemic inflammation and cancer, and help to contain it if it’s diagnosed. Eat plenty of veggies and drink green or white tea along with plenty of water.

In addition, many herbs, spices and supplements can also help to lower inflammation, and limit cancer growth and proliferation, including vitamins C (liposomal), D and E, herbs like basil, parsley, cilantro, and spices like turmeric/curry, pepper, ginger, cinnamon, plus fish oil, garlic and horseradish!

Many of the listed supplements here and in the above points can also help cancer cells to commit apoptosis, although the challenge is matching and combining the right mix for individual needs, cancer stages and other relevant variables (earlier stages are a bit easier, later stages can be a challenge). Dosing and frequency of intake can take some trial and error, but many have some research behind them.

One note of caution: For those with low-platelets, bleeding or clotting issues, many of the herbs, spices and foods listed above can exacerbate those problems, including aspirin and NSAIDS.

Additional supplements that may help manage inflammation are selenium, zinc, MSM (outlined in the #2 section above), Ginseng, Grape Seed Extract, Black Seed Oil, and herbs like Graviola or Thunder God Vine (dosing of this herb is again tricky, with a narrow window of benefits vs. side effects), so work with someone who is knowledgeable that can help you to lower inflammation caused by cancer with little downside.

4. Cancer’s low oxygen environment

As mentioned previously, cancer also thrives in lower-oxygen, hypoxic environments (tumors are often hypoxic because of their poor blood supply and the issues outlined above). And those people who don’t exercise much, it’s easy to  slide into a mildly hypoxic state, which again, can help early cancer cells take root and proliferate. So be active or exercise 15-30 minutes most days to keep oxygen levels up, boost immune function, maintain/improve muscle tone and help clear the lymph system.

If you have cancer, activity and exercise can also help to limit tumor growth, manage stress hormones and improve sleep quality, so exercise regularly if you are able!

There are lots of ways to be active/exercise, including brisk walking, running, biking, yard work, gardening, swimming, sports, etc. The key is make it a habit and stay with it. Don’t be a quitter! On days when you might not feel great, even walking for 10 or 15 minutes can keep the habit going and bring some good benefits and energy!

5. Cancer’s high stress

Chronic, high stress causes hormones like cortisol and adrenalin to increase significantly (you’re probably heard of that fight or flight response), and adrenalin causes the release of glucose stores, adding more glucose to the blood, preparing you to flee if necessary. Remember, cancer cells love glucose and they are happy to have an extra meal that helps them to grow and proliferate!

And those stress hormones simultaneously degrade the immune system, allowing isolated mutated cells, including cancer cells, to spread. Normally, T-cells and Natural Killer (NK) cells are there to catch the thousands of individual cancer cells most adults fight daily. But chronic stress can literally re-write your epigenome, and cause numerous mutations to occur ((see my early link on the previous cancer post called, 5 Keys to Prevent Cancer for details).

For those who get a cancer diagnosis, especially a later stage diagnosis, the shock, fear and disbelief will often increase daily stress significantly, again depressing immune function and helping the cancer to spread and proliferate! Cancer is a very opportunistic disease!

Plan to set aside time for deep breathing, Yoga and relaxation (did you know that deep breathing and exhaling more COhelps to lower acid levels?). Also consider hypnoses and visualization exercises daily as those can help reinforce any other treatments you are using and offer another level of self-care and holistic engagement.

To really fight cancer effectively, it’s also important to process and heal the psychological and emotional challenges that inevitably arise. Cancer can turn your life upside down!

Also, having a future to look forward to is critical, with life goals, work, projects, hobbies, fulfillment and engagement with family and friends is also critical for getting beyond and living beyond a cancer diagnosis.

6. Cancer’s weight loss and muscle wasting

After cancer takes hold, especially in stage 3 and 4 cancers that have spread, it can cause another metabolic problem, called cachexia. Cachexia is a term for a combination of symptoms, such as unwanted weight loss, muscle wasting, fatigue, etc. Cachexia is common in later-stage cancers as well as other diseases, and it causes about 33% of all cancer deaths!

It’s often a result of the constant state of inflammation that cancer generates (see point #3 above), so anyone with cancer needs to work on lowering their systemic inflammation and boosting their nutritional intake. Focus on whole, healthy foods like veggies and quality proteins, supplements, green or herbal teas, water, etc. (coffee is acidic with a pH around 4.5, so it’s best to avoid a habit of drinking several cups per day while you’re fighting cancer).

As stated in #1 above, sweets tend to feed cancer too but some moderate whole fruit can be okay, maybe one small serving/day. Overall, nutrition must be addressed and supported, especially the types of foods covered throughout this post.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3227249/

Here are some additional points to consider when fighting cancer

1. Cancer’s stem cells

Mutated cancer stem cells, such as somatic cells or progenitor cells, are the probable origins of many cancers, and standard treatments don’t often address the 1% of cancer cells that are considered to have ongoing self-renewal as cancer stem cells (CSCs).

Here again, the standardized approach is flawed, focused on more short-term results like tumor shrinkage rather than addressing the origins of the cancerous mutations and their ability to proliferate long-term.

Although more researchers are becoming aware of this problem, it’s been largely ignored for many years! Because most chemo treatments don’t directly target CSCs, the originating stem cells can survive, explaining why so many cancers return and the patient relapses.

When those stem cells are left untreated, they continue to reproduce, and in a few months, the original cancer returns, potentially stronger than ever! Secondary cancers can also arise, triggered by the chemo or radiation treatments (as explained in initial sections), leaving the patient potentially worse of than when they started treatment! It’s a terrible situation with a potentially deadly downside to standard treatments like chemo and radiation.

As outlined in previous sections, nutritional intake is critical for both preventing and fighting cancer, and it turns out that many veggies and phytochemicals can help to target CSCs.

For example, the cruciferous veggies, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage and even horseradish can all be helpful because of their high Isothiocyanate, Glucosinolate and Sulforaphane content.

Vitamins C, D, selenium, green tea and other spices, nutrients and supplements can also help (many are already listed in above sections).

2. Cancer’s adaptability

As mentioned earlier, cancer cells are varied and complex, and they can adapt to changing conditions and drugs like chemo, continuing to spread into other tissues. There is no single cookie-cutter approach that will apply to everyone every time. In this sense, the foundation of medicine’s simplistic treatment approach is logically flawed!

Cancer cells are best kept off balance on a weekly basis so consider changing up your program and supplement use by altering when you take a particular supplement, or by shifting dosages around or cycling off some supplements for a few days. You need to keep them guessing and struggling to keep up, lest they adapt to your routine and it stops working!

In closing

If you or a loved one has a recent cancer diagnosis, my heart goes out to you (both my parents suffered and died of different cancers and their complications).

I hope this article helps everyone understand that more education is needed for all cancer patients and providers, especially for the critical areas outlined above. They are too often ignored in cancer treatments, even though they can explain why cancer remains or returns after a remission. As a health coach who has overcome many health challenges, I’m here to offer my help and support as you start your journey toward recovery from a cancer diagnosis!

It’s clear that cancer is a very challenging disease, and to fight it effectively, patients need to use a more comprehensive, multi-pronged, holistic approach. Traditional allopathic treatments are often ineffective: cutting, poisoning and radiating. As the above post outlined in detail, there are significant metabolic and physiologic imbalances and disruptions that must also be addressed for any hope of a long-term remission or cure.

If patients are left eating the typical SAD (Standard American Diet), high in sugars, junk and processed foods they will feed their cancer’s growth daily. Add to that, the build-up of untreated lactic acid, tissue acidosis, increased inflammation, lack of exercise or emotional support and the often ignored CSCs and, and you have a recipe for cancer relapse and loss of life.

We can halt this disease more effectively than we are doing! Lets turn the page on traditional beliefs and treatments. Let’s start treating cancer patients more holistically today!
